Pantalone is an iconic character from the Commedia dell'arte, originating in Venice. He belongs to the family of masters, also known as the old men (vecchi in Italian). He is often portrayed as a wealthy, miserly, and domineering old man, but is also frequently ridiculed by his servants. He is, of course, very attracted to young women.

Pantalone's origins lie in the Italian Commedia dell'arte, where he first appeared in 16th-century Venice. Emerging from Venetian popular theater and carnivals, his character served as a critique of the merchant class of the time. Pantalone became a pillar of improvisational theater, alongside other masked figures. It is within this context of comedies of manners, blending social satire and caricature, that Pantalone took shape. According to some sources, his name originated from the term "Pianta Leone," meaning "lion plant," the lion being the symbol of Venice.
What are the characteristics of Pantalone ?
Pantalone wears a red costume consisting of breeches, a doublet, and sometimes a long black coat. The word "pantalon" (trousers) is derived from his name! He often wears soft slippers and a purse at his belt, a symbol of his avarice. His mask features a long, hooked nose, furrowed brows, and stern features. Bent with age, he adopts a stooped posture and a rigid gait. He is often quick-tempered, jealous, and pretentious, but also easily deceived.
